few ceramic fragments of this age were collected by Gyula Kovács, the priest of Berea, from the area. These finds, consisting gray, wheel-shaped pottery, both with polished or uneven surface, in­dicates the inhabitation of the region during the 6th and 7th centuries. The settlements of this period were located near the Catholic chapel, at Nisipărie, and on the territory of the Agricultural Coopera­tive. Pottery indicating the presence of a settle­ment, functioning from the 7th to 9th centuries, were discovered near the road to Horea, during the digging of a channel. From the early Middle Ages, only one settlement is known, situated at the Păşune (Pasture) area. Historical Data The earliest historical source on Sanislău dates back to 1306. At this time, the settlement was owned by the nobleman Nicholas Banay, a native of Zemplén County. The village did not remain in his posses­sion for too long, being transferred, only few de­cades later, to those who became the landlords of Sanislău for several centuries: the Báthori Family, originating from the Gutkeled kindred.
