Several small sized settlements, consisting of few houses only, existed on the territory of Ciumeşti during the early medieval period. Their traces were identified at the sites: Berea-Togul Sultész, Berea- Colina cu măcriş, Berea-Vii, Berea-La soci, Berea- Miriştea lui Csányi, Ciumeşti-Bostănărie XI-XIII. Historical Data The earliest written sources on the village of Ciumeşti dates back to 1298. The settlement is mentioned within a real estate transaction between the Gutkeled and the Kaplony kindreds. The families descending from Kaplony kindred remained the owners of the village during the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period. One of these families took the name of the settlement, calling themselves as Csomaközi (of Ciumeşti) family. There were three settlements with similar names (Nogchamakas - Ciumeştiu Mare (the big Ciumeşti), Warchomakuz - Ciumeşti Cetate (Ciumeşti fortress) and Utraque Chamakaz (Ciumeşti ), on closely located sites, during the Middle Ages.
