The first Protestant priest of Căpleni was mentioned in 1590 already, and he served in the church of the mon­astery, deserted meanwhile by the monks. In the year 1609, however, all the members of the Károlyi family returned to Catholicism. They were open towards the option of the inhabitants of Căpleni to join Protestant­ism for a century, but after setting the Schwabs at the beginning of the 18th century, their position changed and they prohibited the use of the church by the Cal­vinist community. During the rebellion led by the prince of Transyl­vania, Francisc Rákóczi II, the troops assaulting the castle of Satu Mare carried out many actions of robbery in the area and, one of the most affected villages was Căpleni. Documents report that villagers withdrew in less dangerous areas, deserting the village for a month. The role of Count Alexander Károlyi (1668-1743) in this conflict had a significant result for the position and wealth of the family. Signing the Peace Treaty of Satu Mare (1711) increased the counts fortune, and put the Károlyi family in the most powerful positions of the kingdom. The active personality of Alexander Károlyi influenced significantly the lives of the inhabitants of Căpleni. He initiated the restoration of the monastery even from 1711, calling here Franciscan monks.
