A SZATMÁRNÉMETI DIREKTÓRIUM AKTIVITÁSA ÉS FŐBB INTÉZKEDÉSEI 1919 MÁRCIUSÁBAN Lőrincz NORBERT Abstract: In the closing months of the First World War, Hungary saw one of its greatest political turmoil into anarchy during its 20th century history. A communist puppet or rump state that has lasted only 133 days was born, from the 21st of March till the V' of August when the Hungarian Soviet Republic has ceased to exist. The so-called Republic of Councils as it was also referred to during that time was led by president Sándor Garbai, but in fact the real power was in the hands of foreign minister Béla Kun, who has been in direct contact with non-other than Lenin itself. From the first day forward the Republic of Councils has formed new administrative forms and has went on a rampant wave of introducing new legislature in the country. The County of Satu Mare was no exception to this ordeal, when on the 23rd of March a new directive has been issued to all the worker councils and the de facto Directorates, the main administrative entity who has basically issued new laws in the County and city of Satu Mare. The mobilization order was also given and martial law was implemented throughout the country to form the new Hungarian Red Army. The Army’s main task will be to protect the peaceful and fluent activity of the Directorate to implement the new political regimes administrative and “ideological” laws. The influence and the power of the Directorate however was short lived, once the Republic of Councils started desperate wars to retake some of its lost territories to their former allies and neighbors in the region. The Directorates days were numbered and together with the fall of the Hungarian Republic of Councils it did fall and has failed to accomplished what it has promised to the masses in Satu Mare as well. Formed by elites that have implemented this rule on the working class who at the beginning supported the idea of such a republic, but soon had a rough awakening to reality once the first restrictive laws were being enforced upon the population of the country. Keywords: Republic of Councils, Satu Mare, local history, Directorate, working class, communism.
