EFORTUL MILITAR AL POPULAŢIEI ROMÂNEŞTI DIN PLASA CEHU SILVANIEI ÎN TIMPUL MARELUI RĂZBOI Augustin Leontin GAVRA Abstract: (The military effort of the romanian population from Cehu Silvaniei’s region during the World War I). World War I was the most important historical event that humanity had to confront at the beginning of the 20th century. World War I was unleashed by the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1914, due to this fact an important amount of people from the bicefal monarchy was enroll into the army. In this context, the inhabitants of the Cehu Silvaniei’s region, that at the moment belonged to Hungária, had to enroll into the army. During the five years, that the war continued, the soldiers from the Cehu Silvaniei’s region, had participated at very difficult battles on the east front and on the Westfront. Although an important number of soldiers had managed to return safely at their homes, a lot of them had lost their lives, and others had returned with serious injuries or disabled. Regarding to the war heroes situation, in 17 localities from Cehu Silvanie’s region we have registered a number of 149 romanian war heroes. At the hard sufferings thatthe soldiers had to endure on the battle court, were added the difficulties that the civil population was enduring at home, due to the lack of men and their contribution. The big number of widows and orphans, that was registered in Cehu Silvaniei’s region, had a very negative consequence on the economy and so the military effort, to sustain the Word War, was even bigger. The improvement of the economic situation by offering land, pensions or other kind of social help, from the state’s institutions, for the population, and the accomplishment of the Big National Union, had enforced the national feeling that the entire military effort was not in vain, and their descendants will have a dignified existence in the Romanian Kingdom. Keywords: Cehu Silvaniei’s region, World War 1, war heroes, widows of the war heroes, orphans.
