Union from 1918 - from stereotypes to the birth of an idea Abstract The union of Transylvania with Romania on the 1st December is viewed in the Romanian historiography as a centennial aspiration of the entire Romanian people. The material presented here offers a different approach to the event, trying to prove that the Romanian leaders in Transylvania (especially the pick of Satu Mare) were taken by surprise by the course of events at the end of World War I. The militants for the amelioration of the situation of Romanians living in Transylvania, the ones existing in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, are now facing a possibility that they hadn't thought of before: the union of Transylvania with Romania. Many people received these ideas enthusiastically, be it out of a sincere conviction, or out of mere interest. 136
