An Early Bronze Age Cremation Burial Discovered at Carei — Bobald and the Problems of this Period in Northwestern Romania (Abstract) In 1997, during the archaeological excavations at Carei — Bobald (northwestern Romania), an incineration burial was discovered in trench XI at the depth of 152 cm. This layer is the lowest level of the Bronze-Age settlement from this site. The „um ” was a pot-type vessel, it had four ears on its neck and the remains of an incinerated human body — a man, with an age between 35—55years — were put inside of it. The um was covered by another pot-type vessel. Both vessels were decorated with Besenstrich patterns, and according to their forms, thy can be dated on the 3rd phase of the Early Bronze Age. Therefore, this burial (M1/1997) belongs to the Sanislău-group. It seems that in the Carei region, the incineration burials with urn were wide spread both in Makó — Nyírség culture and in Sanis lău-group. By the end of the Early Bronze Age a new population appeared, which practiced inhumation (with skeletons in contracted position). In our opinion, the Otomani culture of Middle Bronze Age formed from the fusion between the local Sanis lău-group and the newly settled population. 34
