Species of Zoogeographical significance in butterflies of the Eastern and Southern Carpathians Szabó Andrei The Eastern and Southern Carpathians with their 152 respectively 149 number of species may be considered to be rich as compared to their territorial ranges and height above sea level considering that the highest altitude areas with their characteristic subnival species are not to be found in the Carpathians. The eastern Carpathians are in some way richer in species, because they have a greater extension and are more varied geologically, as well. Though The Southern Carpathians are less varied geologically than The Eastern ones owing to their connection with the eastern parts of The Balkan Mountains and to their higher level above the sea the number of species is almost the same as in The astern Carpathians.
