Hably, Lilla: Egerian fossil flora from Kesztölc, NW Hungary

technical literature (DOLPH and DILCHER 1980a, b, HABLY 1986) seem to convince us of the utility of both approaches. For the present study, however, the former one is adopted, because for the latter we need very large number of specimens, whereas the present amount of information on the Kesztölc flora is not likely to yield a sufficient amount of data. Based on the species composition, considering the predominant species we can say that the zonal climate was in all probability subtropical. The Arctotertiary species present in the assemblage, as they are member of an intrazonal assemblage, signify no deterioration of the climate, only mark the edaphic relations of the period. The reconstruction of the climate, based on the dimensions of the leaves, has been made by possible utilising the experimental results of DOLPH and DILCHER (1979, 1980a, b), thus no further explanation on the method is given here. The cited authors demonstrated that there is a strong interdependence be'ween the size of the leaves and climate, valid in the case of a great amount of evidence only. The leaves were grouped according to their size in the traditional way. Table shows the distribution of the leaf-size dimensions in the individual categories. There is no mesophylous, macrophylous or megaphylous leaf size present, the ruling category is that of the microphylous size group (Fig. 3). Based on this, the determination of the climate would be dubious, but as we have already mentioned, the investigations concerned a relatively small sample, especially the number of measurable leaves was low. Thus in the case of the Kesztölc flora, the climatic reconstruction based on the species composition seems more relevant.
