SQx =J} X" /ZX 2 / n: the number of the samples r : correlation coefficient SQ X and SQy can stand for only positive number, because the sum of the correlation to be substracted can be smaller than the square of the differences. SP can be either positive or negative. The sign of the correlation coefficient is always identical with the sign of SP. Its value may range from -1 to +1 depending on whether there is a positive or a negative correlation between the quantities examined. The closer the value of r is to + 1, the closer the correlation is. The values of r were calculated by means of the linear regression programme made for the PTK 1072 pocket calculator. The data of identical units can be substituted for the x and y values of the above formula. If their units are not measurable with each other, e.g. concentration and pH, the data have to be standardized previously. In such cases the average and the standard deviation of the series have to be individually calculated, then the average is substracted from each sample and is divided by the standard deviation. *ST = x: the average of the samples S: the standard deviation of the samples x: the value of the original sample xg-pr the value of the standardized sample The values of Xg T and yg-j obtained through the above transformation can be substituted into the r formula.
