As a result, I associate joy, happiness and peace with Yuletide. But as a naturalized American I’m from year to year confront­ed with the puzzle: what to make of the Anglo-Saxon “merry” Christ­mas? By tradition, I want it sentimental and certainly not merry. To understand my adopted country better I have searched the long chain of past Christmases until I have finally found one which came closer to merriment than to sentimentality. ' ............................. • A friend gave me a tiny Puli puppy — called, Gipsy — which was to be a surprise gift for my family. I picked up the Puli at my friend and put him into a warm straw basket where he promptly fell asleep. I had plenty of time left before evening and I decided to make Christmas confession on my way home. I went into a church and put down the basket beside me in the confession booth. Gipsy woke up instantly and climbed out to investigate what made his basket stop swinging. As I was kneeling he scaled my legs on one side, rolled off the other side, pulled one shoe off and began chewing my toes. I started kicking and-giggling uncontrollably which puzzled the priest somewhat because he didn’t think my sins were such to laugh at. The more I kicked, the more fun Gipsy seemed to have. The worst came during the traditional pause in confession when sins the priest somewhat because he didn’t think my sins were much to hear. This pause of complete silence was the time Gipsy chose to obey the call of nature. In his five weeks of innocence he made it loud and clear leaving a neat puddle on the floor. The priest who heard it as well as I did, knew of course nothing of the presence of a puppy and naturally assumed I was alone. Gipsy arrived home in time and disguised as a package, was hidden sound asleep under the Christmas tree. The time came to light the candles. As we began to sing “Silent Night” a giftwrapped present under the tree began bouncing and making funny noises. By the time we finished singing, .it had bounced itself across the room, bumped into a wall and yelped. Gipsy stuck his little round head out of the papers with shiny black eyes reflecting the warm glow of candlelight. This was the only Christmas present I ever heard of to open its own wrapper, present itself as a gift on cue and eat every Christmas candy off the lower branches of the tree. The Anglo-Saxons after all are right. It is only a question of wording. Horváth Teréz, Bácsbodrog megyei szárma­zású honfitársunk, aki miután év­tizedekig lakott St. Louis-ban,. el­ső férjével, Letkó Istvánnal, 17 éve élt Cleveland, Ohio-ban, ahol 74 éves korában, november 27-én meghalt. Holttestét lesújtott máso­dik férje St. Louis-ba kísérte és itt helyezték örök nyugovóra néhai első férje mellé a Walhalla teme­tőbe, a Bucholz temetkezési inté­zetből. Az elhunyt alapító tagja volt az Első St. Louis-i Női Segély­egyletnek, melynek tagjai voltak a halottvivők. Gyászolják férje Szi­lágyi János, fiai Letkó Antal és Letkó György, menyei, 5 unokája és 5 dédunokája, fivére Horváth István és annak családja az Óha­zában. Özv. Horváth Jőzsefné, szül. Sterniszky Teréz Vas megyéből származó honfitársunk 73 éves ko­rában elhunyt. Az Edw. Fendler halottaskápolnában volt feírava­­talozva. A St. Raphael rk. temp­lomból temették egy éve elhunyt férje mellé a Resurrection temető­be. Gyászolják 3 leánya, 2 fia, 8 unokája, 1 dédunokája. Domahidy István 70 éves korá­ban december 3-án. az Incarnate Word kórházban elhuny':. Barátok, ismerősök sokasága kereste fel vi­rágdíszes ravatalát az Ambruster halottaskápolnában, ahol Nt. De Kallós Árpád lelkész mondott imát az elhunyt lelkiüdvösségéért és Acsay Dénes vett búcsút az „iste­nes ember, áldozatos magyar és jő barát” Domahidy Istvántól, a köz­életi munkásságának gyümölcsét élvezett- magyar egyesületek, szer­vezetek, intézmények és szemé­lyes jő barátok nevében. A Memorial Park temetőben Dr. Rév. Háry Phillips Jr. a West Pres­­biterian Church lelkésze, —- ennek az egyháznak volt a megboldogult sok éven át tagja és nagy megbe­csülésben állott presbiteri taná­csosa, — Nt. Rév. De Kallós Ár­páddal együtt végezte a temetési szertartást a nagyszámban jelenvol­tak mély részvéte mellett. Halott­­vivők voltak hűséges barátai: Csengödy Gyula, Gera Pál, Kopet­­ti Kálmán, Kovács László, Med­­gyesi Mitschang Lajos, Dr. Zeghy Sándor. Gyászolják felesége, fiai István és György és menye. Your neighborhood discount department store makes sure you do not overlook it. Reminders of Christmas fill the air from mid-August — when the first of the artificial Christmas tree branches are displayed — to the sale-to-the-end-all-sales on Christmas eve — held until midnight for last-minute gift shopping and for discounts on slightly broken tree ornaments, gift wrap (all purple and orange), and greeting cards for next year. The other day I stopped at the $uper $avings $tore (“Where your dollar$ give you more”). I try to avoid such places as if they were TV deodorant commercials, but I drove into a left-turn lane and found my­self parking on the Super Store lot. The first thing that stuck me as I entered the store was how jammed with people it was. The next thing that struck me was one of the 987 2-year olds with whom all such stores are filled. As his 986 companions, he was running around with garlands and tinsel (no longer in a box) and did not take the time to notice my legs. People all around me were looking for bargains. “Look ma,” cried a little girl in joyous Christmas spirits. “I found some pink and blue striped gift wrap.” “Good,” her ma replied. “It should go well with this purple and orange striped ribbon.” Loudspeakers were blaring a scratched-up 1927 recording of a Salva­tion Army band playing “Joy to the World” when I spotted a friend of mine who works in the store as a sales clerk. He was busily rummaging through a table full of blue jeans and work shirts. He sort of jumped when he saw me. “Hi, László,” he said as he continued to go through the clothes. “You startled me. I thought at first you were a customer and I’d have to wait on you. I’ve made it through five weeks without one being of help to anyone. Of course I’m not counting the times I gave people wrong directions to other departments.” “Funny thing,” I remarked. “I almost seems as if you weren’t straigh­tening out these clothes but purposely messing them up.” “That’s exactly it,” he said. “People want their bargains this way. But there are always a few misguided customers who don’t throw the merchandise in the aisles. If people would only return the merchandise to the floor where they found it, my job would be less difficult. It’s pretty tough keeping this place messed up for the Christmas season — Too many people walking around and kicking the merchandise clear of the aisles. Oops. Pardon me. That woman there’s about to ask me for assistance. Just watch me disappear.” I watched and he did. The loudspeakers blared “O Holy Night” and at the part where the words go “fall on your knees ...” and the bass drum beat on the Salva­tion Army recording is on the up-beat, the music stopped and a voice came on: “Attention shoppers,” said the voice. “$uper Savings Store has another special to help you make this the most glorious Christmas ever. For the next 15 minutes or while the supply lasts, we will have the fantastic fun game you child has seen advertised on TV, “Squiggle.” The complete set, including bullets, is on sale now for $37.89. Merry--— Christmas shoppers.” As the crowd stampeded the toy department, the record returned to the part where the words go “O night when Christ was born...
