ration is a question of investment, a question of money, a question of working very hard, none of words, none of speaking and good wishes.

Charles Burns: Thank you, Mr. Gonzalez. Of course this is part of the ongoing process to convince people that we actually are a profession, that we are not archivists simply because it’s our hobby, and to secure and preserve „history“ in archives or to initiate projects in this context means hard work and investment.

Hans Hofmann: We should make up our minds in time, maybe we could indicate a few parities here in a useful way, what we want to do as small steps. And I would like to mention what I heard again this morning, just by chance. There I heard talking about the mobility aspect, that younger archivists would go for one month - as a French example has shown - to another place, coming also here to Vienna. I heard from Mr. Rumschöttel himself that two archivists from Ljubljana will go to Munich rather soon. That would be one example of what we could do. There are other examples that could enlarge our discussion, maybe as Mme. René-Bazin said, not the „archives définitives“ but the „archives courantes“, this means the life cycle concept that should cover every aspect including informatics.

Then, it was mentioned that we should do something in the sense of a Guide of the Sources of European History. I must say that there are already a lot of guides, including the one we have of the EC, covering the 12 member states, from the point of view of foreign ministries, covering the archives of the institutions and of the Secretariat of European Political Cooperation, and called „guide bleu“.

I would stress again whatever we might do together, that the human factor, the career „die Laufbahn“ as one would say in German, of the archivist is very important. We have to get some sort of opening in a modern direction and get the younger and middle management more involved in our activities. That will give us the future of our profession and international cooperation.

Jerzy Skowronek: A propos des suggestions, je pense, premièrement, que cette idée d’élargir l’initiative à propos de la formation de jeunes archivistes est très importante, mais que ce qui est encore plus important, c’est de rapprocher les systèmes des travaux d’archives dans les différentes régions d’Europe. Ce n’est pas possible de former les mêmes générations d’archivistes quand ils travailleront dans de très différentes conditions, dans différentes règles.

Alors, cette idée est un peu prématurée c’est pourquoi je propose que pour l’année prochaine, pour les périodes les plus proches, il faudra nous concentrer sur les développements pour les études comparées. On peut diriger des études comparées pour approcher cette archivistique européenne.

Leopold Auer: Noch eine kurze Bemerkung zu dieser Idee von Herrn Skowronek: Es hat vor einigen Jahren bereits ein Projekt im Rahmen des Internationalen Archivrats gegeben, ein Handbuch über die verschiedene Systeme der Archivverwaltung zu erstellen. Erik Ketelaar hat die Idee dazu geliefert und sogar ein Projektpapier ausgearbeitet. Der Plan wurde dann leider aus praktischen Gründen nicht weiterverfolgt.
