5.4. Transferral of the System to other Archives The Archivo General de Indias computerization project came to be along with the desire to distribute it to other centres. The Ministerio de Cultura saw it as a pilot project for computerizing the rest of the Archivos Histôricos Estatales. But it is also available for any institution who wished to use the results achieved. In the meantime, the first model developed in the system, User Management, is already functioning in the following Archives: Histörico Nacional, General de Simancas, Chancilleria de Valladolid and the Civil War Archive. The complete system, although still with small amounts of information, is now beginning to function in the Archivo Histörico Nacional, and it is hoped to be able to begin its introduction in the Archivo General de Simancas in 1993. Other archives not dependent on the Ministerio de Cultura, such as the University of Salamanca or the Kingdom of Navarre are at this moment attempting to use the System which may be ceded to non-profit-making organizations who so wish. 6. The AGI Project and Remote Access. Present State 6. 1. New perspectives This document we present is being produced during December 1992. Two months have passed since the King and Queen of Spain inaugurated this computer system in Seville. Since then, work has been done on negotiating a new agreement between the three participating institutions in order to continue for a further two years, up to the end of 1994. Among the different aspects which arc to be included in this new agreement is the objective of facilitating remote access to information which the AGI’s computer system provides - at the very least, textual information - and if possible information from the Digital Image Storage System. An initial experience took place in 1992: as another of the commemorative events of the Fifth Centenary, the Fundaciön Ramön Areces facilitated the technical and human resources necessary to set up a connection to the system from the Huntington Library in Pasadena (California). It was not yet direct access to the Archivo General de Indias, rather it was a copy of the system and the data bases in Madrid. A leased line (Madrid-Califomia) served to transport data from the text data bases. In the Huntington Library, a usei station, similar to those in Seville, made online look-up possible. To complete the demonstration of the service a small Local Area Network was established, integrated by the user station, a communications server and a optical disk server. With a copy of several optical disks in Pasadena, a „local „demonstration of the images service was thus also offered, although remote access was carried out only for textual information. 4.
