At the beginning of the 20th century, in Hungarianinhabited settlements in Southern Slovakia, we could talk about bilingualism only in respect of settlements located on the language border. Greater number of bilingual population could only be found occasionally, mostly in those cities whose economic environs expanded to both ethnic groups’ territory.

However, the new state border drawn up at the Paris Peace Conference did not follow this historically devel-Pozsony/Bratislava, cca. 1900
