New Resources for Studying the Traditions of Smith Men-Servants:

Purchase of Names - Namenkauf

(Summary)

Among guild traditions, the description of riddance, „baptism”, or „initiation” is widely known from numerous fields of trade and industry. We know that the disengaged men-servants entered a higher rank in the guild hierarchy, they were no longer allowed to walk on the mates’ rank after the so-called initiation. Up until now, we have had the most thorough description of the traditions, the extent, and the artifacts of the initiation procedure only from specific sources about weavers dating back to the 17* — 19"' centuries.

Among these traditions, the rituals of giving and buying names (Namenkauf) constitute a distinct group, Up to the present time, several sources have surfaced in relation to the guild traditions. Our previous knowledge can be broadened with the help of the sources coming from the hitherto unexplored possibilities, such as the rich material of archives and museums situated in the Hungarian Kingdom before 1920 and annexed to various neighboring countries after the Paris Peace Treaty.

In my paper, I will present the letter of privilege given to the blacksmiths (Hufschmied) living in the settlement of Somlóvásárhely in Veszprém county in 1671.

(Összefoglalás)

A szerző tanulmányában a céhes szokások körében külön csoportot képező névadás, névvétel {Namenkauf) szertartásaival kapcsolatban közöl újabb adatokat, mégpedig egy, az összefoglaló könyve (A magyarországi mesterlegények közép-európai kapcsolatai és szokásai a XV—XIX. században. Budapest 2000) megjelenése után kezébe került dokumentum alapján. Az 1671-től privilégiumlevéllel rendelkező Veszprém megyei Somlóvásárhely patkolókovácsainak „legénykönyvéről” van szó, amelynek adatait a szerző részletesen elemzi, nemzetközi összefüggésekbe helyezi, megállapítva, hogy a 18-19. században élénk kapcsolatot tartottak fenn az egész közép-európai céhes világgal. A dolgozat magyar nyelven teljes terjedelmében (térképekkel, illusztrációkkal) olvasható: Ethnographia 118 (2007), 203-218. p.
