2014 / 1. szám - TANULMÁNYOK - Frank Sawyer: Gerard Manley Hopkins: "Christ plays in ten thousand places"
Gerard Manley Hopkins The import of this poem is that the falling of leaves disturbs the innocent idyllic view of a child, and this reminds us of the biblical Fall from grace and the intrusion of death. In the end we are also mourning for ourselves and for the state of corruption and mortality - which is the great situation of ‘blight’ we are born into. The idyllic harmony is gone. Hopkins wrote this poem - though loaded with potent words - in a simple manner with a song-effect. We identify with the emotions of the child, but also with those of the poet. Grief is reminded to us in smaller and greater ways. Nor does the poet, even though sympathetic, offer comfort, but rather a warning - as we noted spoken not really to the child but to himself - that greater sorrows are yet to come. And this time Hopkins does not round off his lines with the triumph of salvation as in some of his other poems. It is enough to establish this knowledge of the decaying world and our own suffering and mortality, for these will lead us to the Saviour. It is when we do not open our hearts to the reality of our fallen fallibilities and sinfulness that we feel invincible and do not feel a need for divine grace. In amazing ways, Hopkins the poet-priest breaks out of many usual constraints, leaping to a new style, which he finds necessary to express some old, but strong and bold truths. These thus become rather new, awakening our minds and hearts to clearer insights, and to the need to re-think about how we view life itself. Absztrakt Gerard Manley Hopkins „Christ plays in ten thousand places” Gerard Manley Hopkins „Christ plays in ten thousand places” című krisz- tocentrikus költeménye nagyszerűen adja vissza az Ószövetség szuverén istenképét és Isten teremtő nagyságát.
