ÍGÉRETRE HANGOLT REMÉNY - MESSIÁSI ÍGÉRETEK ÉS EZEK BETELJESEDÉSE Abstract Hope Tuned to Promise - Messianic Promises and their FULFILMENT Over against the critical view that doubts the messianistic character of Jesus’ mission, this article recommends the approaches of J. C. O’Neill and J. van Bruggen on the subject. O’Neill states that most Jews were aware of the fact that it would not be an easy task to recognize the Messiah when he came. Therefore they had to test a possible Messiah on the base of the Holy Scriptures and the other literary traditions. O’Neill’s hypothesis consists of the view that a rule existed forbidding the Messiah to reveal explicitly his identity. This would make the conduct of Jesus perfectly fit into Jewish drinking of his time. A useful addition is given in the view of Van Bmggen, who states that the apparition of John the Baptist is an indispensable fact that has to be taken into account for understanding the messianistic character of Jesus’ work among Israel. 2011/4 Sárospataki Füzetek 37
