BÖRZSÖNYI JÓZSEF Abstract Discipline Discipline is not only a task to be carried out in religious education classes — even if it means a special challenge in that context. Discipline has its Biblical background, and the present study wishes to present some aspects of that background. The basis of discipline is the one and the same in the Old Testament and in the New Testament — even if its practice was rather different. We read in Leviticus 19:2: “Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy.” Similarly we read in Paul: “It is God’s will that you should be sanctified.” (IThess 4:3). “For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.” (IThess 4:7) The first half of the article is a study on God’s holiness as the basis for discipline - concentrating on the Hebrew term 2np. The second half of the study looks at the Old Testament occurrences and meanings of ID’ - to chasten, correct, punish; to admonish, exhort, instruct. 62 SÁROSPATAKI FÜZETEK
