THE MESSENGER Newsletter of the Kossuth Club February 2011. Vol. 17. No. 2. Liszt Bicentennial. In 2011 we observe the 200th birthday of Ferenc Liszt, who was bom in Doborján, Hungary (today Raiding, Austria) on October 22, 1811. After a distinguished career as a globetrotting virtuoso pianist, Liszt founded the National Hungarian Academy of Music in Budapest in 1875. He was the Academy’s first President and one of its professors. The American music critic and biographer James Gibbons Huneker (1860-1921) wrote in 1911 that Liszt was the “first cosmopolitan in music...a pianist without equal, a conductor of distinction...a writer, reformer of church music, a man of the noblest impulses and ideals, generous, selfless, and an artist to his fingertips...the real Liszt was a man of intellect and a deeply religious soul. ” The Kossuth Club will have a memorial recital in the Glenridge Auditorium later this year to celebrate 200 years of Hungarian piano music. Our guest artist from Budapest, László Borbély, is well known to Sarasota audiences from his 2003 performances here. The talented young pianist is currently a professor at the Liszt Academy and proudly carries on the legacy of the founder. Watch this space for detailed information about the concert in the coming months. February Program.
