THE MESSENGER Newsletter of the Kossuth Club June-July 2010. Vol. 16. No. 6-7. Farewell—The Last Concert. Dr. Eugene Szonntágh has been a member of the Kossuth Club for the past 20 years and served on the Board of Directors since 2001. In 2009 he was awarded a Certificate of Merit, the highest honor of the club, for his valuable contributions to our benefit concerts for the Kossuth scholarship fund. Early in April Eugene called and asked that I announce a concert that he wanted to give in their new home in Horizon Bay. On April 7 some 35 people assembled in the small apartment that he shared with his wife, Nora. People sat on the floor and they spilled out onto the corridor to hear him play. By then, he could only move around with the aid of a walker but he gave a rousing recital on both the organ and the piano. He played Bach, Vivaldi, Sarasaié, and one of his own compositions. It was a moving performance and we all hoped that there would be a repeat. Alas, this has not happened. Dr. Szonntágh passed away on May 8 at the age of 86 and we will not hear him play anymore. Our hearts go out in sympathy to his wife of 59 years and to his family. May he rest in peace and listen to the music of the heavens. Open Board Meeting. We invite all interested members to attend our next Board meeting on Wednesday, June 16 at 5:00 PM in the upstairs Conference room of the Selby Library (1331 First Street, Sarasota). The distribution of scholarships and the fall and winter program plans will be discussed. There will be no meeting in July. In August we will observe the Saint Steven Day holiday on August 19. Details will be published in the August Messenger. We wish you all a merry summer vacation! 4
