THE MESSENGER Newsletter of the Kossuth Club October 2007. Vol. 13. No. 8. After the collapse of the Communist regimes in East-Central Europe in the early 1990’s, tens of thousands of children were left without families and social services to care for them. Children of the Hungarian ethnic minority in ethnically mixed parts of Romania, a.k.a. Transylvania, were especially vulnerable because of the double whammy of joblessness and discrimination. A Roman Catholic priest of the order of St. Francis, Fr. Csaba Böjté, O.S.F., took matters in his own hand and started a movement to provide shelter, food, clothing and love to those most helpless in a turbulent society, the children. He took over abandoned and ruined buildings, most of them confiscated former church properties, and with the help of selfless young volunteers restored them to provide shelter for the children. In a little over fifteen years, Brother Csaba and the St. Francis Foundation have accomplished a minor miracle and have saved and care for more than 1500 children and endangered youth. We can only look with amazement at the phenomenon of how love inspired hundreds of unpaid volunteers who help care for the children. This unprecedented movement continues but needs YOUR help. Just $200.00 will feed one child for an entire year. In the United States, the Hungarian American Cultural Association, Inc., a.k.a. The Kossuth Club of Sarasota (P. O. Box 19774, Sarasota, FL 34276) accepts tax deductible donations to benefit the children cared for by Brother Csaba and the St. Francis Foundation. There are no fees, or deductions, 100 percent of all donations is transferred to the bank account of the Foundation in Déva. Please make your check payable to the Kossuth Club.
