THE MESSENGER Newsletter of the Kossuth Club November-December 2006. Vol. 12. No. 9-10. Remembering the Revolution. An estimated total of one thousand people attended the five events organized by the Kossuth Club during the last week of October to observe the 50th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. More than 500 people, many of them Americans came to the two concerts given by artists from the Franz Liszt Academy of Music. We have been accustomed to talented musicians selected by the Academy before and again, the artists did not disappoint. Soprano Ildikó Szakács and tenor László Honinger gave powerful renderings of arias from Erkel and Kodály operas and folk singer Mária Maczkó was a fresh and bright touch with her singing of Hungarian folk songs and arrangements. Violinist Ádám Banda delighted audiences with his virtuoso performances and pianist Árpád Kákonyi did yeoman’s job doing double duty as soloist and accompanist. At the festive luncheon keynote speaker Dr. István Mikola, a member of the Hungarian Parliament and president of the Hungarian Health Society gave an inspiring speech about the moral and historic significance of the revolution in today’s Hungarian society. Visiting Bishop Emeritus Endre Gyulay of the Diocese of Szeged-Csanád said Roman Catholic Mass in Hungarian to a packed Church of the Incarnation. Operation Outreach—1956. Our effort to reach out to a large audience of Americans and educate them about the Hungarian Revolution was highly successful, thanks to our able Press Secretary Lily Elizabeth Farkas. Press releases were issued and sent to 34 regional newspapers, there were two one-hour radio programs, and several local papers ran articles and published interviews with participants and survivors of the revolution. It can be safely said that Hungarians never before gained such wide recognition in the American media in southwest Florida. We continue our lecture series about 1956 in schools, service clubs and local organizations. December Programs.
