THE MESSENGER Newsletter of the Kossuth Club Január, 2004. Vol. 11. No. 1. The Zathureczky Violin. The widow of violinist Ede Zathureczky (1903-1959) donated $10,000.00 to the Kossuth Club. Ede Zathureczky was one of the foremost Hungarian concert violinists of the first part of the 20. century. He was a pupil of Jenő Hubay at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest and succeeded Ernst von Dohnányi as director of that illustrious institution in 1943. He came to the United States in 1957 and was a professor of violin at the University of Indiana at Bloomington. Mrs. Vera Zathureczky Lendvay has donated her late husband’s violin to the Liszt Academy earlier. Her recent gift was directed to the Liszt Academy Foundation for the care of the violin and for the benefit of young violinists in Hungary. Milestones. With this issue we start the eleventh volume of the newsletter. In the past ten years we have followed a consistent policy of bringing Hungarian culture through music and the arts to American audiences. We have supported cultural and educational institutions and students in Hungary and in Florida. We were able to donate more than $170,000 in scholarships and charitable contributions because of the generous and enthusiastic support of our members. Donations in 2004 were as follows: Franz Liszt Academy Foundation (for the Zathureczky violin) $10,000.00 Sapientia Hungarian University in Transsylvania $5,000.00 Hungarian School in Csíkszereda (Transsylvania) $2,700.00 Hungarian Scouts in Slovakia (Felvidék) $500.00 Bolyai School in Szabadka (Délvidék) $500.00 Wass Albert Hungarian School in Sarasota $500.00 Kossuth Scholarships $800.00 Sarasota Opera Association $100.00 The Church of the Redeemer organ $500.00 Total: $20,600.00 Our January Program. On Thursday January 27 at 4:30 PM in the Selby Public Library Dr. Steven (Csaba) Pádár will present an illustrated lecture „Mysterious Kamchatka ” in English. The election of the Board of Directors for 2005 will be held after the lecture. Please return the enclosed proxy if you cannot attend the meeting. 4
