THE MESSENGER Newsletter of the Kossuth Club April-May, 2005. Vol. 11. No. 4-5. 1956-2006—Half a Century. In 2006 Hungarians all over the world will observe the 50^ anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian revolution. On October 23 1956 the Hungarian people revolted against the Soviet occupation of their country and communist rule imposed on them after WW2. Although it was crushed by the overwhelming force of the Red Army, the Hungarian revolution stood the test of time: the past 50 years have proved that it was one of the most significant historic events in the 20“ century. It showed that the monolithic Soviet Empire was vulnerable from within and it started the decades-long process of its disintegration. The Kossuth Club will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the revolution in 2006 in a manner commensurate with its importance. We will participate in the worldwide celebrations and have special programs planned. In this issue of the newsletter we announce the programs for April and May. The next Messenger will be published in September after the summer hiatus. We wish our readers a pleasant summer vacation and bon voyage until we meet again! Fund Raising for Disadvantaged Children in Transylvania. On Thursday, April 21 at 4:30 PM in the Selby Library (1331 First Street, Sarasota) we will show a film about the work of a Franciscan order in Transylvania. In the past 13 years the St. Francis Foundation of Déva established seven orphanages and schools for orphaned and disadvantaged children where volunteer teachers and foster parents provide a home, schooling and faith to those who have the greatest need of it. The founder and soul of this charitable mission, Fr. Csaba Böjté, was awarded “Man of the Year” for 2004 by the Hungarian News magazine. The foundation has helped more than 500 children so far. The Kossuth Club is collecting donations to contribute to this noble effort. Please make your check payable to the Kossuth Club and mark “Déva Foundation” on the memo. Donations are tax deductible and will be acknowledged in writing. 2. Season-Ending Social Get-Together and Informational Show. On Thursday, May 26 at 4:30 PM in the Selby Library (1331 First Street, Sarasota) we will have an informal get-together with refreshments. Ágnes and Attila Tóth will present information about herbal products that can help to improve our health and well being without drugs. Questions and inquiries about the products are encouraged but there will be no sales. Mrs. Tóth is one of the teachers in the Hungarian Albert Wass School of Sarasota. 4
