In a field of fifty entrants Barnabás Kelemen won first prize as well as six special prizes at the prestigious international violin competition in Indianapolis. In 1998, when he was a 19 year old student of the Liszt Academy, „Barney” performed at the Kossuth Club benefit concert in the Sarasota Opera and gave early notice of a huge talent. We congratulate him and wish him a long and successful international career. Bánk Bán in Los Angeles. The Hungarian film Bánk Bán based on the 1852 opera by Ferenc Erkel opened to rave reviews in Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles Times „the most important musical drama of Hungary’s national cultural heritage, has at last reached the screen in all its grandeur. ” Oscar-winning cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond, shooting in muted color, brings a remarkable fluidity and cinematic grace to the film. The Times review notes that ErkeTs emotion-charged music has been compared to that of middle-period Verdi, it soars and the singers sound „glorious.” Hungarian Orchestras in Naples (Florida). On January 8 2003 the Budapest Festival Or conducted by Iván Fischer, and on February 22 2003 the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Zsolt Hamar will perform at the Naples Philharmonic Center. There will be a wine and cheese party for the Kossuth Club following the March 23 2003 matinee performance of „Die Fledermaus” at the Sarasota Opera Pavilion. If you haven’t already done so, please reserve your party tickets ($10 per person) by January 1. You don’t have to attend the performance to come to the party but you do have to have a reservation to the party if you want to attend it. Successful Fund Raising. Thanks to the generosity of our members and guests we collected $574 for the Bolyai School in Szabadka at our November meeting. Memberships for 2003. Please renew your membership before Januaiy 30. Family membership is $30, individual membership is $20 per annum. Christmas Party. Our Christmas Party and a book sale will be on Thursday, December 19 at 4:00 PM in the Selby Public Library. Steven Béla Várdy and Ágnes Huszár Várdy will review their books „Hungarians in the New World” and „Mimi,” respectively. Refreshments will be served.
