Avar Anton – C. Tóth Norbert: Szabolcs vármegye nemessége és címeresleveleik (Nyíregyháza, 2022)

Bevezető

szabolcsi_cimereslevelek_home.indd 27 2022. 02. 09. 20:58:37 In several cases missing (erased or illegible) names were retrieved using the preserved journals of the assembly of Szabolcs county. Instead of the complete texts of the charters I present only the original blazons of the grants in Latin, which are transcribed letter by letter, preserving the spelling peculiarities of the originals, all in lowercase (with the exception of the words starting a sentence), with modern punctuation, using ”s” instead of ”s”, ”i” instead of ”j” and using the alternating ”u” and ”v” according to their sound value. Completely illegible words that could be extrapolated from other similar charter texts are put in square brackets, with indecipherable words marked by an ellipsis in square brackets. Abbreviated words are written in their full form without indication, and syllables omitted erroneously by the scribe are indicated by angle brackets. Each patent of arms is illustrated by an image of the whole document and also of the miniature of the granted heraldic achievement. In some cases the latter was not painted, or it was cut out of the charter. In these cases I provide an image of the coat of arms published in the literature on heraldry, if there was one. The reproductions are accompanied by the blazons in Hungarian, made primarily on the basis of the painted images, although in the case of the patents lacking a painted coat of arms the blazons were made based on the original Latin text. In the Hungarian blazons I aimed to make a concise and precise description containing only the important details, consistently blazoning the escutcheon, the crest and the mantlings in a single sentence. This volume musters a selection of the most spectacular documents concerning the history of Szabolcs county and the noble families that lived there, their patents of arms, and hopefully will delight many readers interested in the history of the county. 27
