The centralizing efforts of Emperor Joseph fanned national sentiments in Hungary. One of the ways of resistance was placing emphasis on being Hungarian. The struggle for a wider к use of the Hungarian language became a central issue of national politics. The language of bureaucracy was changed from Latin to Hungarian. Another issue that the Lower House made efforts to achieve at the session of the parliament in December 1832 was that the .;y language of all documents to be submitted to the monarch should be Hungarian; what is X more, they wanted the language of the law itself to be Hungarian. The counties obtained the permission of the king to replace the original Latin circular inscriptions on their seals with Hungarian ones in 1836-1837.33 33 34

The seals of the counties, containing the national coat-of-arms, were donated by the king, and even the smallest change in them was supposed to be approved by the monarch as well.

For donating a new coat-of-arms, the king requested the professional opinion of the Chancellary, and made a decision afterwards. A charter with the coat-of-arms was made out after the donation, and the new seal or coat-of-arms was copied in colour in the Royal Books.

At the session of the county assembly on the 3th of September 1835, György Bay viceprefect noted that the county seal was bent, difficult to use, and initiated the production of a new and larger seal, with the same coat of arms and ’circumscription in Hungarian
