SUMMARIES STUDY OF THE MITTLE AGES GÉZA ÉRSZEGI: On the Deed of Foundation of the Monastery of Lelesz (1214) The activity of the monastery of Lelesz as an authenticated place covered the whole region of North-East Hungary. Its deed of foundation of 1214 gave historians plenty to think about. The document says the following: Andrew II (1205-1235) on the one hand confirms the gifts the monastery was provided with. They were donated by Boleszló, who was the bishop of Vác. On the other hand the monastery was given privilege in taxation and jurisdiction. However, the authenticity of the deed has been questioned. Its outer characteristics are hard to judge as no original copy has survived. Its wording has been rewritten several times. Its phrases follow the structure of the contemporary deeds but they are not usual at all. The striking deficiency of the deed of 1214 is that it does not tell us who the founder of the monastery was. It turned out from a later deed that the monastery of Lelesz was founded by Boleszló, the bishop of Vác with Andrew II's permission. Boleszló was already dead when the church of Lelesz was consecrated. It could be the reason why he was not mentioned. The consecration may have been planned by 1213 but it was postponed because of the death of Queen Gertrúd. The deed of foundation was made by the monastery in advance so the king's task was only to seal it. Although the deed contains a lot of unusual elenents, it cannot be considered fake. The author publishes the text using the transcripts that survived.
