between 1824 and 1826. The interest rate was the then usual 5-6 %. The third resource was the revenue generated from the town's substantial real estate. For decades, the town efficiently used the opportunities offered at the resettlement. As a result, the free serfs laid down the foundations of becoming free burghers. The process is illustrated by the chapter of the contemporary tax register related to the property relations of the townspeople, and a summary chart of the bank loans and creditors. CSABA KATONA The Guests of the Balatonfüred Spa (with Special Attention to those Coming from Szabolcs County and Nyíregyháza) Balatonfüred was one of the most popular holiday resorts and spas in 19th-century Hungary. Guests came from all parts of the country. Complete lists of guests survived from 14 years between 1840 and 1919. These lists are interesting sources of surveying last-century tourism at the Balaton. Füred was by far the most expensive spa during the whole period in question. In addition to this, roads were not very good and before the railway was constructed, access to Füred had been long and difficult. These circumstances determined the circle of the guests, who were primarily wealthy citizens from the nearby places of Transdanubia and Budapest. Still, the number of guests coming from more remote places — including even far-off towns like Nyíregyháza — increased, especially in the second half of the century. Although the number of visitors from Szabolcs County was not high in any of the years examined, their presence indicates that Füred was a spa well-known all over the country. When analysing the data related to the visitors coming from Szabolcs County, it was found that their overwhelming majority came from Nyíregyháza, then already the county's most important town. The guests on the lists were all prominent personalities of Nyíregyházás community: landed aristocrats, Jewish wholesalers, wealthy burghers etc. Szabolcs County therefore fits the image drawn up as a result of the research into the circle of guests visiting the Balatonfüred Spa. BEÁTA D. MACZKÓ Kisvárda in the Period Between the Two World Wars In the study the role, situation and development of Kisvárda is presented in the period of the Horthy-regency. The settlement had the status of a village, but it was a municipal centre with its schools, banks and hospitals in the densely populated upper-Szabolcs area. The number of the population increased dynamically, and with its highly developed infrastructure it was standing out of the neighbouring settlements. After the Versailles Peace Treaty, when the territory of the country was mutilated, the neighbourhood belonging to Kisvárda also became smaller. The town was no longer able to support the large population. The economic depression accelerated the decline. The number of banking institutions, commercial outlets and constructions radically diminished. The increase of the population stopped. By the mid-thirties Kisvárdás population slowly began to reduce as
