Zsolt Karádi NATION, FATE, LITERATURE (In memóriám Mihály Czine) In the paper an attempt is made to draw up the major milestones in the career of Mihály Czine. The literary historian was born at Nyírmeggyes in 1929 and died in Budapest in 1999. When looking back upon his career, we do not only wish to talk about the scholar, but also about the "wandering preacher" — the multilateral activity Mihály Czine did in order to make Hungarian literature known to as many people as possible. The volumes titled Nép és irodalom (Nation and literature, 1981) and Németh László ekklézsiájában (In László Németh's Church, 1997) are the focus of the present paper, as these volumes offer a full insight into the way of Mihály Czine's thinking, influenced, shaped and nourished by writers of the popular movement, Péter Veres, Pál Szabó as well as Ady, Móricz and László Németh. When examining the values of Czine's popular literary history writing we need to mention his visual language which often uses elements of high and sophisticated literature as well. In the draft description of Mihály Czine's career attention is also paid to his efforts to popularise and introduce ethnic Hungarian authors living in the neighbouring countries to the general public.
