RÉSUMÉ The diocese of Szombathely, one of the smallest and youngest in the country, was founded by Maria Theresia in 1 777. Its territory was cut out of the areas of the bishoprics of Győr and Veszprém as well as of the archdiocese of Zagreb. János Szily, as the first bishop of the diocese, commenced his work with the organization of his bishopric. He understood that the most important task he faced was the formation of priests. Therefore he established the Major Seminary and it was his goal to unite his priests coming from three dioceses and speaking different languages. To further the education of those working in the pastoral ministry, he formed an association. To support the pastoral work, the bishop began the visitation of his diocese and, as a result of this, established new parishes. In supporting the education, he instituted schools, in fact, built up a united network of schools. He put his valuable book collection to the service of the cultural development of the community. In 1791, he founded the library of the Cathedral, which was open not only to the priests, but also to the public. It was bishop János Szily who established the first archeological museum in the country, located in the Sala Terrena of the episcopal palace. János Szily started a building project of grand scale after he took the episcopal seat. The first tionen (-reihen) in Kőszeg, Zalaegerszeg, Sárvár und Szombathely, mit der zu ihnen gehörenden Kirche oder Kapelle. Gläubige Menschen haben an vielen Wegen und Brücken Kreuze und Statuen aufgestellt. Sie sind Ausdruck des Gebetes um Gottes Hilfe (und regen dazu an). Andere wurden aus Dankbarkeit für erhaltenen Segen oder zun Andenken an Verstorbene errichtet. Sie sind aus Stein oder aus Holz. Im südlichen Teil der Diözese stehen seit Jahrhunderten meistens hölzerne Kreuze. Die morschen werden von ihren Betreuern stets durch neue ersetzt. Unter vielen Hunderten ragt ein Kruzifix (in schöner Umgebung) unweit von Ivánc mit ihrer (Ausdruckskraft) hervor. Die bunte Bemalung verleiht ihm eine volkstümliche Art. Der (dieser) aus Anlaß des Besuches unseres Hl. Vaters (Johannes-Paul II.) in Szombathely herausgegebene Band (Bildband) soll die Diözese Steinamanger mit ihren sakralen Bauwerken kurz vorstellen. 142
