Dr. Julius Géfin: The Cathedral of Szombathely Outline Local Chronicle. Szombathely, the ancient ,,Colonia Claudia Savaria“ the oldest town of Hungary was raised to the rank of a colony by Tiberius Claudius in about 43. a. Chr. and was the capital of Pannonia Superior. The martyrdom of St. Quirinus and the birth of St. Martin made its name well-known in the Christian world. The excavations of St. Quirinus' Basilica and of the Roman roads m the years 1938—39 revealed eloquent monuments of the ancient grandeur of the town, (illustration 2.) Since the XI.-th century the Bishops of Győr were the lords of the town and their castle played an important role in the Turkish wars. In 1777 an independent Episcopal See was created at Szombathely, The first bishop was an energetic, highly gifted man, John Szily, (ill. 1.) who, by establishing a grammar-school, a philosophical and a theological high-school, a public library, a museum, a printing office and by creating many buildings of artistic merit, made the town a centre of culture, (ill. 3—4.) The building of the Cathedral. After having built the Seminary and the Episcopal Residence, Szily begins the building of the Cathedral on the spot of the former castle and it is he himself who sketched all the items of the programme. His architect was the Tyrolese Melchior Hefele (1716—94) after whose death J. G. Anreith continued his work. Szily died in the year 1791. his second successor, John Somogy finished the inner decoration of the Church. Description of the Cathedral. The Cathedral is built in the classicising baroque style. The classical elements are chiefly to be found on the faqade in the interior, in the independent execution of details, in the rythm of the arrangement of the huge pillars and in the applications of cornices of rich profile, while the elements of the style of Louis XVI. find their expression in the inner decorations, 207
