■n conaacrer plus entierement a Renseignement universitaire et á la recherche*- - -------------------------- ------------------ Veuillez agréer, mon Cher Collégue, l’assurance de mes sentiments cordiaux.- ---------------- -- - - - -■M.Plancherel s.k. •May 26, 1947 TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN ------------------------------------- - -- - I have known the mathematical work of Dr.Béla Szőkefalvi-Magy for many years, quite particularly in the Theory of Operators, in which I have worked myself more or less continuously, and where we have had numerous contacts. Dr.Sz.Nagy is an excellent mathematician who has shown absolute devotion to scientific research and who has produced many excellent original contributions in the past, showing a continued, well balanced, high-quality productivity, and of whom I feel there is every reason to expect the same in the future Dr.Sz.Nagy’s interests in Analysis, in the borderline fields between Analysis and Modern Algebra, and, more particularly, in Operator Theory and Group Theory, are very felicitously distributed, and I think that he is better fitted than anyone else I know to continue at Szeged the great tradition of the late Alfred Haar.- - -- -- -- ------ A chair with the primary emphasis on analysis, algebra and group theory seems to me most urgently called for in any university, in view of the rapid and increasingly confluent development of these fields, and the inereaéing influence that their results, as well as their methods, exercise in the other parts of mathematics. Dr.Sz. Nagy, whom I^consider to be a first class scientist, is a candidate for such a chair, I would like to recommend him most warmly.- - -John von Neumann s.k.
