This is enough to encircle the planet at the equator with a continuous strand of wire a total of thirteen times. Hooped petticoats were still worn with corsets. The size of the décolletage was considerable, revealing much of the chest, shoulders and arms. The hair, in contrast to the styles of the Rococo, always remained small, which also helped to further emphasise the contrast between the upper and lower halves of the dress. The age of Napoleon III liked expensive, light fabrics. Silk, satin and fine worsted fabrics were worn all day. At festivities they appeared in costume made of splendid, shiny and reflective taffeta, velvet, brocade and especially China silk or moiré. Summer costume is made from crepe, tulle or muslin. The frilled dresses almost lift their fashionable wearers off the ground, and the women in clouds of tulle passing by at social evenings sometimes become living balls of fire. The feather-light dresses claim many victims. Archduchess Matild, daughter of Archduke Albrecht, hid her cigarillo behind her back at the sound of a door creaking, her tulle dress caught fire and she was burnt to a cinder.
