Éva Vámos: STEAM, WATER, VACUUM
STEAM, WATER, VACUUM Éva Vámos In Italy coffee was drunk from the 1630s on, and the Italian coffee-preparing masters were famous, for their expertise, all over Europe. The production of coffee machines started, however, after the coming into being of unified Italy only, from the 1860s on. The first pioneer was architect Giovanni Toselli who, at that time, had family coffee machines patented in the shapes of railway engines. He later switched to manufacturing high capacity coffee machines. These machines gained popularity not by their structure but by their denomination "espresso". The word itself is nothing else but the Italian form of the word "express". This word acted, in the industrializing, accelerated world almost with magic power, and Angol ezüst lokomotív, Bramah gyűjtemény, London English silver licomotive, Bramah collection, London contributed to the industrial coffee machines' worldwide career lasting till today. In the 1880s British, American and German manufacturers produced high-capacity coffee machines with standing central cylinder boilers (for storing warm water). These devices, in general of stainless steel or plated chromium, had vertical cylinders, with several outlet taps on them, for preparing several cups of coffee at the same time. The machine types with horizontal cylinder boilers almost exclusively used today will be dealt with later on.
