Fig. 3. A newer cord, resp. braid had been sewn over the braid prepared with metal thread, over the braid which closed the edges of the dividing straps and of the selvedges. Beneath this the original, somewhat thinner one can be found nearly everywhere. On the left side of the fore-part the missing six small parchment plates had been replaced by a further braid which was then sewn on. The gilding of the silver wire covering the parchment plates showed signs of wear, therefore these had been newly gildes with gold plate. The remains of the gold plate can be seen well on the underlay-material of the embroidery, moreover at some places even on the pearls. The lining of the mitre, the inner cap and the tassel at the end of the ribbons are the results of the repair carried out in 1861. It can be assumed that like other mitres ornamented with pearls, also this one could have had a lining decorated with embroidery. Before we had started the conservation of the mitre, its surface had been dusty. The pearls had gone dry, became brittle and they became a little greyish (Figure 4.). The fact that the silk thread with which the pearls had been sewn to the mitre became age-worn to a great extent, indicates also to a strong drying out. As a consequence of this, the pearls kept dropping down from everywhere, so that they required to be reinforced even at places that
