Enikő Sipos: Conservation of the mitre stored in the Treasury of the Basilica of Esztergom

uamarin, the ends of the lappets are decorated with gold tassels. The embroidery of the mitre is a sculpturesque pearl-embroidery, prepared on a linen-cloth base, this embroidery covers the whole surface (Figure 1.). The horizontal and vertical dividing bands, the triangular fields on both sides, furtheron the pearl-covered base of the lappets had been decorated by colourful gems (1). The fastening of the gems had been done with two methods. On the horns of the mitre they are fastened with a metal plate which had been folded in two, whereas on the lappets they had been sewn to the base, using the four loops made of wire and sodered to the settings of the gems. The edges and the inner proportioning of the mitre are framed with a finger-wide, braid-like embroidery. Small plates formed of gilded silverwire wound around a parchment and coiling spirally, and strings of pearl are alternating on it with each other. On its lover rim, a newer pearl-embroidery can be seen, a protruding embroidery on a silver-interlaced silk base. Fig. 2. The lining of the mitre is a silver-lampas silk cloth. The inner cap is made also of the same material. To the back-side of the embroidery, paper has been glued (Figure 2.). It belongs to the mitra preciosa type which is worn on greater feasts and it is decorated with precious stones, pearls, gold or silver plates. The dimensions of the height and width are identical in case of a coronation mitre, without the lappets they are 33-33 cm. The length of the lappets - without the tassels — is 30 cm, their width is at the bottom side 6,5 cm, at the top 4,5 cm. In 1791 Frigyes Keglevich grand provost, in 1861 János Scitovszky archbishop, then in 1916 János Csernoch archbichop gave commission to the repair of the mitre, so it has been repaired several times (3).
