In the case of the playgoers we can with some certainty check the relation between intention and realization, but we know nothing of those who do not visit the theatre. So it is difficult to speak about the changed social function of the theatre, that could only be defined if we could speak for the whole of the society. Scientific investigations and statistic figures show that at present the influence of the theatre is restricted to a rather limited section of society in Hungary. In conclusion Dr. Hont summarized the results of the meeting, and outlined the programme of theatrical sciences and of the living theatre. He emphasized that the still existent caprice and haphazardness of the theatre can only be eliminated if the art of the theatre is based on scientific knowledge and conscious planning. The complex theatre art can only fulfil its task and become a means of the transformation of social consciousness if it acts as a reservoir for the different branches of art. - 66 -
