THEATRUM 1965 /Extract/ Within the Literary and Language Department of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences a Committee of Theatrical Sciences was formed on the 4th December, 1964. On the one hand the Committee is to summarize the results and promote further theatrical research, whilst on the other hand it is to clarify the theoretical problems of Hungarian the­atre research. The Committee, with the participation of the Insti­tute for Theatrical Sciences held a scientific meeting at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, on the 12th April, 1965« The topic of discussion was chosen from the numerous prob­lems of social - realist theatre arts. The present issue of the Theatrum contains the material of this meeting. The symposium was opened by Dr. Ferenc Hont,academic laurate in literature, President of the Committee for Theatrical Sciences, Director of the Institute for The­atrical Sciences. Dr. Hont, having drawn attention to a number of unsolved problems, dealt with the situation and tasks of the Hungarian theatre in particular. He argued with the widely spread theory that the socialist character of the Hungarian theatre is exclusively determined by the staging of plays with definite socialist conviction. He emphasized that the message of a play is not exclusively in its text, but is also determined by the concept and interpreation of the producer.
