The organization of the Hungarian Institute of Theatrical Sciences and its methods were reviewed in the 1962 issue of the Theatrum. But here again we have to make It clear that the Hungarian Institute of Theatrical Sciences is essentially different from all the institutes abroad that are seemingly of a similar kind. While abroad the different branches of theatrical sciences tend to be specialized, in Hungary they are becoming more and more concpntrated. Thus the department of research work, the documentation section, the museum and theatrical publishing are functioning together under the same direction. The greatest advantage of this centralization is that the individual branches of theatrical sciences are not isolated and therefore their development is synchronous. This form of organization ensures that the institute is able to fulfil its treble task; 1. the work of collection and systematization 2. research work and the creative elaboration of its results 3. the popularization and employment of knowledge, the utilization of the results of the research. Finally Dr. Hont spoke about the particular difficulties that can only be overcome by the national and international co-ordination of the practice and theory of the theatre. In the discussion that followed theatrical managers and research workers took part. They stated that the scientific study of the theatre has an invaluable importance for the practice of the stage. Both from a principle and from a practical point of view the results of research have to be made use of, otherwise it is impossible to defin the practical laws, the characterics of content and form of the theatre, of this socially useful form of entertainment. - 184 -
