Introduction The changes of the theatrical life of Hungary forced us to re-think the structure and concept of data of our Year Book, which has been published for decades with an almost constant structure. Previously the basis for the data was the companies; we published the list of productions, names of artists and actors connected to the particular theatre companies. Although the theatre structure has not changed basically, the rigid framework of companies has evaporated, and by nowadays, neither the majority of directors, and designers, nor the actors belong exclusively to a company. Therefore, to be able to follow their activities, we had to create a new system for organizing the data. In the first half of the present Year Book we publish data of the companies, with no regard to their genres and forms of functioning. Professional companies are listed here, just like independent, off-structure companies. We have registered prose and musical companies, dance theatres and children theatres as well. We publish the most important data of the companies in two chapters (address, phone, fax, e-mail, name of managing director). In the first chapter those companies are listed which have a permanent place for performance, and those places which host theatre productions (the typography expresses that which theatre means a company, a class of a company, a chamber theatre, a studio or another place for performance); while in the second chapter those companies are listed who do not have a permanent place for performance. (The basic concept for these latter companies was that only those groups are registered who had a new premiere in the season, one exception was made though with those children theatres which work permanently, but do not produce a new premiere every season.) The data of Hungarian theatres in the neighbouring countries follow in the third chapter. All three chapters are closed by the list of productions of the season. The numbers used here refer to the place in the list in the next part of the Year Book. This second part includes the list of productions of the season in alphabetical order. (Indefinite articles have been considered as words in the titles.) We have tried to be as complete as possible in publishing data (not like in the previous decades). On the one hand, we publish here not only the name of the creators of the production, but the cast (with the names of the performed roles) as well. On the other hand, we have included a much bigger diversity of theatrical genres. This is signalled by the different chapters: the list of those theatre productions which include prose and musical premieres is fol9
