NYÁRÁDI ZSOLT NOBEL FAMILIES FROM MUGENI (BÖGÖZ) AND THEIR BURIAL CUSTOMS Abstract We managed to discover several elements belonging to the activity of the nobility from Mugeni through the archaeological excavations done inside the sanctuary of the Medieval church from Mugeni during its restoration. In our research, we also received help from the restorers, who discovered an epigraphic inscription dating back to 1509 on the diagonal arch, which mentions that the Gothic phase of the church was built by the nobleman János Bögözi. The family, which took his name after the village (Bögöz), where they held their most important estates, appears in sources dating back as far as the 15th century. The archaeological excavations revealed several noble tombs, which can be linked to the Bögözi family. After their disappearance during the first decades of the 16th century the estates and the role of church patronage were taken over by the Farkas family. During the first part of the 17th century, this family built a stone crypt in which 9 skeletons were identified. Only two graves were discovered dating from the following century, one of which had been placed in a crypt made of wooden beams. After analyzing historical and archaeological sources, we have followed the evolution of noble families up until the late 18th century, when burials were no longer done inside churches. The archaeological data recovered during the excavations reflected burial rituals, the structure and placement of coffins, furthermore the garment fragments, which showed the fashion of the time. 76
