THE PARISH OF MIERCUREA CIUC (CSÍKSZEREDA) BETWEEN THE TWO WORLD WARS Abstract The aim of my research is the presentation of the Parish of Miercurea-Ciuc between the two World Wars, with special regard to the fact that the First World War, which redrew the map of Europe broke out a hundred years ago. The market-town Miercurea Ciuc - which developed in the 14th century and received its name from the markets held here on Wednesdays -, stagnated through centuries, but its late chapel served the religious life of the population. It became an independent parish in 1751 thanks to the bishop György Mártonfi, and the town which undertook the protectorate. It became the central town of Ciuc County during the formation of the county in 1876. The construction of the imposing public buildings of the town started from then on. At the beginning of the 20th century, the necessary steps were taken for the building of the new church, but these were seriously hindered by the Great War. In 1916, the inhabitants dispersed and fled from the battles. The following vicissitudinous conditions of suffering had alienated many souls. The town was almost completely destroyed by the fightings. The homecoming priest and his followers were met by a presbytery reduced to ashes and surrounded by smoking houses. First, they repaired the church, then life was able to begin again. The change of the Austro-Hungarian imperium took place in 1918. Also, this was the date when the presbytery established the Roman Catholic Hungarian Primary School. These events were followed by the organisation of ecclesiastical associations, which comprised the women, the men and the youth, and rendered very good community services. All this happened with the guidance of the parish priests. The visitation and the support of the bishop strengthened the community continually. The building of the new presbytery in 1928 counted as a success. During the decades, there were not only good leaders, but also weak-handed, and even disruptive leaders in the community. The regular retreats, the devotions and religious processions, the cultivation of tradition were all encouraging for the community. But people underwent ordeal too, imposed by the servants of the prevailing powers. There was also a change of view before the big political changes. The person of Ferenc Bíró, a sensible and tempered man was crucial in this shift. The time of his death marks the end of the period covered by the current paper. Every single change had contributed to that explosion-like development which towards the end of the 20th century made Miercurea-Ciuc (Csíkszereda) the biggest parish of the Alba Iulia Primacy.
