In prima parte, schiţează istoricul staţiunilor din Transilvania, iar în a doua parte, se ocupă pe larg de Băile Borsec, una din cele mai cunoscute ale epocii cercetate, din perspectiva unei tinere fete burgheze de la sfârşitul anilor 1880. Scrisorile lui Iza Novák din 1889 provin din perioada de dezvoltare a Borsecului, sunt o mărturie a vieţii mondene a staţiunilor balneare de la sfârşitul secolului al 19-lea, şi atrag atenţia asupra frumuseţii peisajului şi comorilor naturale ale locului. Totodată, prezintă greutăţile şi peripeţiile drumului parcurs de la Gyula la Borsec, subliniind necesitatea unor investiţii indispensabile asigurării comodităţii vizitatorilor localităţii. “ANYWAY, I WAS REALLY HAPPY WHEN ON TUESDAY AT MIDDAY WE ARRIVED TO BORSZÉK” BORSEC (BORSZÉK) SPA THROUGH THE EYES OF A BOURGEOIS GIRL FROM GYULA IN 1889 Abstract This study examines some general characteristics of the spa culture and Borsec (Borszék) Spa in the period of dualism based on the letters written by a wealthy bourgeois girl, Iza Novák at her visit in Borsec in 1889. The first part of the study deals in general with the spa culture of that age, then examines Borsec Spa in details, while the second part shows us how one of the most well- known spas of Transylvania looked like from a young bourgeois girl’s point of view at the end of the 1880s. Iza Novák’s letters written in 1889, at the booming period of Borsec Spa beside filling in with life the picture of the spa known from contemporary tourist guides, also confirm the general picture of Transylvanian spas at the end of the 19th century: the use of the extraordinary natural treasures were hampered by the difficult access and the defective projects aiming the leisure of the guests. 153
