A HÁZIIPARI SZŐNYEGSZÖVÉS TÖRTÉNETE CSÍKBAN THE HISTORY OF RUG WEAVING HOME INDUSTRY IN CIUC Abstract At the end of 19th century, as a result of government-supported development of home industry, the festékes (dyed) rugs of Ciuc (Csík) came in the centre of interests of the civil society. In the early stages of home industry-developments the 'discovery' of the high esthetical quality of peasants' household-objects, the education of crafts, the increase of employment, the initiation of women into economical life and the industrialization of underdeveloped regions were equally important social-economic goals. The revival of festékes rug weaving in Ciuc began within the national development program, with the support of Mrs. Lakatos, principal of Civil Girls’ School of Ciuc (Csík) County. In the 1920's and 1930's the rug weaving was the most successful branch of local folk art movement. In this period the weaving of festékes was organized by Mrs. Pál and Mrs. Gál. The handwork of craftsmen's cooperative established in the 1950's was indirectly based on the knowledge acquired two decades earlier. This study sums up the 130 years old history of rug weaving in Ciuc (Csík), and it is a shortened and rewrote version of a study with similar subject, published in the Ethnographical Museum’s Women, rugs, home industry exhibition catalogue in Budapest. 329
