A CSÍKI SZÉKELY MÚZEUM ÉVKÖNYVE 2006 213-228 MUCKENHAUPT ERZSÉBET 16. SZÁZADI DEBRECENI KÖTÉS A CSÍKI SZÉKELY MÚZEUM RÉGIKÖNYV-GYŰJTEMÉNYÉBEN Abstract: [A medieval binding in the ancient books collection of the Szekler Museum of Csík realized to Debrecen in 16 th century] In the ancient books collection of the Szekler Museum of Csík is guarded a work of Nicolaus Clenardus (1495-1542), professor of Leuven (flam., Louvain - fren., Löwen - germ.), Institutiones ac meditationes in Graecam linguam, printed in 1566 in the workshop of Lyon of Joannes Mareschallus and published by Andreas Wechelus, member of the famous dynasty of European typographers and publishers Wechelus. This work represented for two centuries one of the most known textbooks of Greek language in the European schools. The copy from Miercurea Ciuc (rom.) / Csíkszereda (hung.) is protected by a leather binding decorated in technique of the dry or blind printing, with floral decorative motives, realised with the stamp and the plate characteristic to the style of the Renaissance. On the occasion of the restoration in the binding we discovered fragments of several printed matters and a manuscript. 14 titles were identified as the spoil sheets of certain books published in Debrecen (Hungary) and Oradea (rom.) / Nagyvárad (hung.) (Romania) during the years 1563-1586, in the printing offices of the typographers Mihály Török, András Komlós and Rudolf Hoffhalter. Among these six have an extraordinary value. They are unknown in the history of the book and the printing thus, they are unique. The fragment of manuscript results from a calendar drafted in Latin for the year 1579 or 1584. On the base of the ornaments and the printed fragments the author establishes that the binding was realised in a workshop which functioned in Debrecen, in the second half of the 16 th century. The grammar of Nicolaus Clenardus was probably acquired in the second half of the 16 th century by one of the Hungarian wandering students at the European universities. Having circulated some time in Debrecen, at the beginning of the 17 th century the book entered the ownership of certain collectors of books from Transylvania: Stephanus and Michael Vajda, Petrus Krajnik. In the second half of the same century the book was used as textbook in the Jesuit school of Alba Iulia (rom.) / Gyulafehérvár ( hung.). On its pages we can read among others the note of the scholar Jesuit missionary of Romanian origin Georgius Bujtul, professor of Alba Iulia's school. Between the years 1681-1951 the book was in the ownership of the famous library of the Franciscan monastery of Sumuleu-Ciuc (rom.) / Csíksomlyó (hung.), and later, following the nationalisation, entered the collection of the Museum from Miercurea Ciuc / Csíkszereda.
