László Paczuk: EUROGASCO and MAORT's Production Methods

Getting natural gas from Zala to Budapest turned out to be a tough problem, because there simply was not any money available for the construction of a gas pipeline from the Zala oilfields to Budapest - the uncertainties in production outlook did not back up this plan either - even though MAORT made a serious offer for the construction of the required pipeline. In exchange it requested permission to reduce production by 25% on a temporary basis, in the interest of sparing gas reserves. Although this proposal was completely logical and rational, the Ministry of Industry, as well as of Construction, and of Labour Services did not accept it. Finally, altered cycle crude oil and gas transportation began over the Bázakerettye-Soroksár oil transportation pipeline from November 28,1948, and although this w T as constructed as makeshift solution, it is a good example, among its kind, for the skills and creativity of the company's professionals. 73 Other facilities and technological equipment During the war years, MAORT realised that it would be necessary to construct its own refinery, which was done in Szőny, but almost from the very moment of going online, bombing made its operation impossible. A couple of what were called pocket refineries were provisioned in 1944-45, but these only functioned for a few months, and mainly served to supply the German military machine. Between May 1946 and June 1947, a graduation works was operated in Lovászi, which extracted common salt from oilfield water. The unit was operated to supply MAORT's workers. There were plans to provision a bitumen oxidizer at the Hahót-Pusztaszentlászló field based on the attributes of the crude oil produced there, but this was never realised. 6 An experimental C02 purification plant using activated carbon operated in Mihályi from 1937, which MAORT took over as of 1938. Small quantities of dry ice was also produced here for cooling purposes.'' MAORT's outstanding professionals Over the course of more than a decade of its operation, a number of professionals besides Simon Papp, all outstanding in their domains, contributed to the company being able to play a definitive role in Hungary's life despite the rather difficult political, social and economic circumstances. There are four MAORT professionals who absolutely must be mentioned in the scope of this paper. 78 BÉLA BINDER - Working as MAORT's production engineer, he was the first to design and implement a gas injection system in Europe. He raised his voice against oil production where gas is wasted as early as 1943. His life principle was frugality with gas energy, he was nevertheless sentenced to 4 years in prison on the basis of fictitious accusations in the MAORT sabotage trial. 73 SZABÓ 1974 389-393 74 SRÁGLI 1998 58 ' SR Uil.l 1991125 '• MOIM Arch.
