buildings. Therefore the express aim was to improve the condition of these buildings in a very bad state, including those cases as well when, despite of the restoration carried out earlier (20-30 years ago), intervention is necessary again. The 300 million HUF available for the tasks to be carried out was shared among 47 buildings. Facilitating the works became the task of the Hungarian National Board for the Protection of Historic Monuments. The major part of the archaeological research had been carried out in 1999 and the investment plans were also being done. Upon a mutual agreement a contract with the local organisations (churches, local authorities, local contractors) for handling the awarded money and for forwarding the restoration work was signed. €) Restoration of Palaces and Manor-houses in the Millennial Period Almost one hundred big palaces and historic gardens and 650 smaller palaces (manor-houses) and mansions survived in Hungary. This group of buildings was hardly, if at all, restored. The National Trustees of Historic Monuments (MAG) was founded in June 1992 with one of its aims being to professionally manage these buildings and historic gardens and to prepare them for receiving the public. MAG considers it one of its tasks to achieve having palaces restored and presented them to the public as part of the national cultural heritage all over the country. Opening the palace in Budapest-Nagytétény, under the auspices of the Museum of Applied Arts, will be a nice event of this year. In Fejér county the Nádasdy palace in Nádasdladány, built in English-romantic style, and the Károlyi palace in Fehérvárcsurgó, built in English-neo-classicist style, will be restored and opened under the auspices of MAG. In the neighbourhood of Budapest, the restoration of the Royal Palace in Gödölh is also in progress, with significant financial resources available. The restoration of the Vay Ádám renaissance palace museum in Vaja is carried out under the auspices of the Directorate of the Trustees of the Treasury (KVI). Related to the restorations of palaces for the millennium MAG undertook to manage collecting one-time palace furnishings. The items so acquired will enrich the interiors of the palaces restored by MAG. Further 20-25 palaces that had become vacant in the course of time are presently managed by the KVI. From among them, as an example, the baroque bishop's palace in Sümeg was awarded a special millenary financial support within the framework of the National Heritage Programme Applications. O National Heritage Programme Applications To contribute to the proper celebration of the Hungarian Millennium, on 01 March 1999 the National Heritage Programme invited applications to promote the works necessary to be done for the safeguarding, maintenance and restoring of our architectural and archaeological heritage and the publishing of research results. In the course of the preparations for the millennium, for a number of settlements the support awarded this way was almost the only financial resource available to protect, restore and properly present the values of our cultural heritage. The Applications were to be handed in in five categories, covering the following areas: 1. Protecting and restoring architectural heritage 2. Supporting making construction plans based on research of the building(s) 3. Palace/manor-house programme 4. Protecting historic gardens, parks, graveyards, tombs/sepulchral monuments, historic memorial sites with a listed building 5. Listing/inventorying and uncovering archaeological monuments and publishing research results. The total sum shared out among the award-winners by the minister of cultural heritage was 1,505,113 thousand HUF (cca 5.8 million USD), as follows: Category 1. Category 2. Category 3. Category 4. 489,000 thousand HUF 49,500 thousand HUF 796,500 thousand HUF 170,113 thousand HUF
