SYNAGOGUE, GYŐR The synagogue in Győr is a significant architectural monument of the neologian branch of the Hungarian Jewish community that was legitimised in 1868. Completed in 1869, it was one of the first synagogues suitable for housing large masses of people. The commission to design the building was given to Károly Benkó, architect, since his work submitted to the national competition was awarded the first prize. The formation and details of the building greatly effected city synagogues built later. Dramatically diminished in number during the Second World War, believers were unable to take care of the more and more urgent renovation. The building went into state ownership in 1968, together with the adjacent two wings which housed a school. The renovation of the synagogue has begun; the entire roof structure was reconstructed in 199495. The interior thus gained has brilliant acoustics which presented the opportunity to organise many successful events thereafter. According to the re-utilisation concept the building will function as a cultural centre and will host concerts and theatre performances, conferences and exhibitions; while the original architectural features will fully be restored.
