SAINT ANNE URSULINE CHURCH, GYŐR The church of the Order of Saint Ursula in Győr was constructed in 1762 in baroque style. The ceiling frescoes were created by the local painter István Schaller, a member of the Viennese Academy. The wall painting in the nave portrays the vision of Saint Angela, the founder of the order and the apotheosis of its patron saint, Saint Ursula. When the church was renovated in the early 20th century, the frescoes were painted over, the interior furnishings were radically changed, certain elements were removed altogether. The primary task was to restore the ceiling paintings. The original paintings revealed in this process were badly worn, and large parts were missing. Minor missing parts could be completed in a distinguishable, but not striking manner, while the larger devastated parts of the frescoes had to be fully restored, so that the original effect of the painting be preserved. The original baroque work of art and polychromy were restored to its original splendour. Restoring the fragmented elements of the original furniture was also an important task in renovating the interior of this 18th century church.
